Widespread deoxygenation of temperate lakes

چکیده

The concentration of dissolved oxygen in aquatic systems helps to regulate biodiversity1,2, nutrient biogeochemistry3, greenhouse gas emissions4, and the quality drinking water5. long-term declines concentrations coastal ocean waters have been linked climate warming human activity6,7, but little is known about changes lakes. Although solubility decreases with increasing water temperatures, lake trajectories are difficult predict. Oxygen losses lakes may be amplified by enhanced decomposition stronger thermal stratification8,9 or increase as a result primary production10. Here we analyse combined total 45,148 temperature profiles calculate trends for 393 temperate that span 1941 2017. We find decline widespread surface deep-water habitats. primarily associated reduced under warmer although increased subset highly productive lakes, probably owing production phytoplankton. By contrast, deep stratification loss clarity, not solubility. Our results suggest change declining clarity altered physical chemical environment Declines freshwater 2.75 9.3 times greater than observed world’s oceans6,7 could threaten essential ecosystem services2,3,5,11. Analysis finds waters, which at temperatures depth.

Mechanisms of the Deoxygenation of the Hypolimnia of Lakes

The deoxygenation of the hypolimnia of lakes and reservoirs normally occurs as a combined result of the sediment oxygen demand and the oxygen demand of the algae and other plant materials that grow in the epilimnion. For some waterbodies, there may be appreciable amounts of oxygen-demanding material brought in from the watershed, but this is usually a relatively unimportant source of oxygen dem...

Terrestrial dominance of organic matter in north temperate lakes

[1] Aquatic ecosystems are hotspots of decomposition and sources of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere that are globally significant. Carbon exported from land (allochthonous) also supplements the carbon fixed by photosynthesis in aquatic ecosystems (autochthonous), contributing to the organic matter (OM) that supports aquatic consumers. Although the presence of terrestrial compounds in aquatic O...

Food-web stability signals critical transitions in temperate shallow lakes

A principal aim of ecologists is to identify critical levels of environmental change beyond which ecosystems undergo radical shifts in their functioning. Both food-web theory and alternative stable states theory provide fundamental clues to mechanisms conferring stability to natural systems. Yet, it is unclear how the concept of food-web stability is associated with the resilience of ecosystems...

Lake restoration and biomanipulation in temperate lakes: relevance for subtropical and tropical lakes

This introductory chapter to the book “Tropical eutrophic lakes: their restoration and management” gives a summary survey of the responses of temperate lakes to increased nutrient loading (the eutrophication process) and during remediation. Chemically and biologically conditioned resistance may cause a delayed response to the nutrient loading reduction and different methods of overcoming this r...
